Nurse's Office

The Health Service is an educational phase of the school program which should provide health promotion, health protection, health education opportunities for the students and the school personnel.

The Health Center is located in the administration building. One full-time nurse serves as health counselor or advisor on any student health problem. To contact the nurse, call (623) 435-6303.

When accidents or illness occur during school hours, emergency care will be given according to the standing orders; then any further care is the responsibility of the parents and/or guardians. All accidents are to be reported immediately.

In case of illness or accident during the school day, the student must obtain a permit from his/her classroom teacher to go to the Health Center . The nurse may, on her judgment give the student permission to go home, or she may send the student back to class.
School nurses are constantly being asked to dispense internal medications, such as aspirin, to students. Compliance with such requests, in addition to being contrary to good health practice, is contrary to state law.

The GUHSD Board of Education is a corporate body charged with the responsibility of providing an education for high school aged children. The Board and its representatives do not have the right to practice medicine by dispensing medication, in any form, to students.

Under certain circumstances, when it is necessary for a student to take internal medication during the school hours the nurse may cooperate with the family physician, parents, & the student if the following requirements are satisfied:
  • The medication must be prescribed by a physician.
  • There must be on file with the school nurse a written order from the physician stating the name of the medication, the dosage, & the time of administration.
  • There must be on file written parent permission to administer the medication to the child.
  • The medication MUST come to the nurse in the original OR refilled prescription bottle, as prepared by the pharmacist.
