Instructor: Mr. Aguilar
A pledge to my students: I will provide you with the opportunity to excel in a successful learning environment. I will respect you and work with you to solve problems. I will promptly correct and offer feedback on your work. I will help you meet your learning goals. I will offer extra help and alternative assessments should you require them. I will trust you until you give me reason to do otherwise.
At the end of the year, my first year drafters take a performance-based assessment (PBA) of their knowledge. It is my goal to have all of you prepared to excel on this exam.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:This course covers principles fundamental to the making and reading of mechanical or architectural drawings. The drawings will be produced using both manual equipment and computer aided design systems.
You will develop drafting skills through ‘board’ and computer aided drawing. The curriculum is designed to be challenging and self-paced. The subject matter requires a lot of concentration until the basic concepts are learned.
I expect to have your undivided attention until the concepts are learned. You are expected to complete all drawings, homework, and activities in order to have a successful experience in this class.
For the first few weeks, drafters will ‘board’ draft via pencil sketches and drawings before drafting using Computer Aided Drafting on the computers.

COURSE OUTLINE:
OFFICE HOURS/LEARNING CENTER:
Room 1204. 7-8am Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri; 8:20 – 8:55am Wed
I offer time before school for students who were absent or need more time to complete assignments. For participating, you can earn a maximum of 9 extra credit points per quarter when you sign in.
STUDENT BEHAVIORS, POLICIES, and PROCEDURES:These rules are intended to maintain a successful learning environment. Any violations by you will result in disciplinary action. Also, any student whose name is written for bad behavior by a substitute will automatically result in two hours of detention when I return.
1. Be prompt - Be at your assigned desk ready to learn when class begins.
2. Be a polite and positive participant - Speak in a normal tone of voice, and listen attentively. Talking to your classmates is not permitted during class assignments.
3. Be productive - Turn in work on time, and always do your best.
4. Be prepared - Have materials with you and know due dates.
5. Be responsible - Protect furniture, computers, tools, and equipment and prevent tagging, engraving, and breakage.
6. Be respectful - Treat all with respect, no profanities, value individual differences, no “put-down’s”
7. Food, drinks, gum, and candy are not allowed in this classroom.
8. Moving about the room without my consent will not be tolerated.
Failure to follow these next rules will result in more serious disciplinary action!
· Internet use is prohibited.
· Plagiarism is stealing. Do not copy! Do your own work!
· Do not play computer games.
· Do not change the screen saver, background, or computer properties in any manner.
· Do not insert objects into the disc drives nor abuse/steal any computer equipment.
Orders of the house
· Meet your classmates. Get to know not just names, but their hobbies, culture, interests, and views on life.
· Raise your hand if you need my attention and I will notice you. Shouting my name distracts me and your classmates. I find that to be disrespectful.
· Wait to be called upon before speaking. This helps to keep ideas flowing.
· Bring a book to read when you finish assignments quickly. Reading adds new vocabulary and increases your intelligence.
· Hall passes are limited to one per quarter.
· Conserve and recycle paper – use scratch paper for sketches and the recycle bin for unwanted paper. Do not place water bottles, tissues, or trash in the recycle bin.
· Do not throw tools to another student, that’s how they break and it’s a safety hazard.
· Whispering to your friend is the same as talking.
GRADE METHOD:Your grade is based on a cumulative point system with a total point value depending on the amount of coursework assigned.
Drawings and homework can earn a maximum of 10 points each. Your score depends on these factors: neatness, accuracy, dimensions, alignment, and alphabet of lines. A drawing with no errors will earn the maximum 10 points.
Team projects, construction projects and tests will have various point values.
Grades are based on the following formula:
Each Quarter Grade Scale
20% Tests or Projects 90 - 100% = 1 (A)
80% Drawings/Sketches 80 – 89 = 2 (B)
70 - 79 = 3 (C)
Each Semester 60 - 69 = 4 (D)
50% Quarter 1 or 3 + below 60 = 5 (F)
40% Quarter 2 or 4 +
10% Semester exam or Assessment
Grades are normally posted weekly, and students and parents are always welcome to discuss grades with me. On the online grade book, if you see an assignment without a grade listed, that means I have created the assignment, but I have not entered the grade for it yet. It does not imply that you did not do the assignment. M or 0 in the grade book indicates you did not do the assignment.
DRAWING REVISIONS/RE-GRADES: You are allowed to revise any graded 10-point assignment for a re-grade (once per assignment). This does not include projects or tests.
CLASSWORK/DUE DATES: Like on the job, each assignment has a deadline which must be met. Directions are included with each assignment. Each assignment is due when indicated. Any late work will be denied full credit (minus 10% per day) after the due date.
HOMEWORK: You will have homework in this class. However, you should not expect homework assignments everyday since projects require tools only available in my room. Homework is due the next day.
ABSENT/MAKE-UP PROCEDURE: Read the attached make-up policy for more information. If you are absent, you are responsible for getting class notes, assignments, etc. from another student. Because drafting requires tools only available in my room, you must complete assignments in class before school within the time allowed. Books and tools are not to be taken home.
EXTRA CREDITOPPORTUNITIES: 3 extra credit points when a family member visits during Open House. Also, a maximum of 9 extra credit points per quarter if you attend learning center or office hours. No other extra credit opportunities are available.
I am looking forward to another very successful year,
Mr. Rudy Aguilar
