Physical Science: Concepts in Action
DESCRIPTION:
Integrated Science is a year long course in which students will explore several different branches of science including: geology, astronomy, meteorology, physics, and chemistry by means of the scientific method. The information will be presented through various forms such as lecture, internet/technology, labs, and hands-on activities. All topics and assignments are aligned with the Arizona State Standards.
SUPPLY LIST:
· Pens, pencils, highlighters, colored pencils, and dry erase marker
· 3 ring binder, paper, composition book
· Scientific Calculator
ATTENDANCE:
Attendance is imperative toward student success in this class! Absences are the single biggest cause for student failure. Getting any make-up work and/or information given in class is the responsibility of the student. Please note that any student with 13 or more absences in each semester class, will automatically loose credit for that semester. Please refer to the district attendance policy for further details.

STUDENT EXPECTATIONS:
- I expect all of my students to ‘Keep on TRACK’ while on campus
- Truth Respect Active participation Cooperation Keep trying!
- Homework is due on the following day unless otherwise noted.
- Movies are sometimes used as an alternative source to present or reinforce information discussed in class. All of the movies chosen by the science department are rated PG-13 or below, and by signing the syllabus, you are giving permission for your student to watch the following videos*:
- The Core
- Dante’s Peak
- An Inconvenient Truth

EVALUATION:
Below is a description of how your grade is broken down throughout the term:
Exams: (70% of total grade)
All Unit Exams follow a modified OUTCOME BASED format. Unit Exams consist of many questions that are multiple choice and short answer. All exams meet the following standards…
- Each outcome has a value of 100 points. (An exam with 5 outcomes is worth a total of 500 points.)
- Only outcomes with a score of 80% or higher are acceptable and recorded towards the students final grade in the course.
- Any outcome scored below an 80% will not be accepted and recorded as a “0” and receive no credit for the outcome. Outcomes scoring below 80%for a grade will be allowed a second opportunity to retest.
- The highest possible score a student may receive on a retested outcome is an 80%. Any score below an 80% will be recorded based on the number of questions answered correctly. The better of the two grades will be recorded. Example: (5 out of 10 questions will equal a 50% - 9 out of 10 on a retake will equal 80%).
- All “0’s” will be applied towards the student’s grade unless correctives are completed on the exam retake day.
- At the completion of the semester/term, all scores will be totaled and a grade will be assigned according to the standards of the grading scale.
Coursework/ Quizzes: (20% of total grade)
Aside from unit exams, twenty percent of the students’ final grade is based on assignments that have been completed and turned in on time. All assignments include…
- Written Quizzes
- Vocabulary Exams
- Homework Assignments
- Unit Projects
Laboratory Experiments/ Reports: (Part of the Coursework/ Quizzes total grade)
Aside from unit exams, twenty percent of the students’ final grade is based on laboratory experiments and completed lab reports that have been turned in on time.
Final Exams: (10% of total grade)
At the completion of the course, a Final Exam will be given. This exam will cover all of the material presented throughout the term. Final Exams ARE NOT outcome based.
Grade Scale:
90 – 100 A
80 – 89 B
