Eighth Hour
Eighth Hour is an after school program that is for students in the Small Learning Community who need extra help to pass their classes.  The following information breaks down exactly what this program entails.

Since we do not want any of our students to fall behind on their credits, we are offering to provide extra help for those who are failing. Beginning on November 24, an “eighth hour” will be added to the schedule for Small Learning Community freshmen who are failing one or more of the following classes: English, math, thinking science, or business fundamentals. This 8th hour class will be required every Monday through Thursday from 2:40-3:15 and will be a time for our students to improve their grades.

The “8th hour” is a required course for SLC students who are failing. Attendance will be taken, and the school’s discipline procedures will be the same as they are during regular school hours. In addition, students will also be subject to a strict attendance policy, which follows these procedures:
  • First unexcused, or second excused absence: parent-teacher-student conference at the school
  • Second unexcused absence: three hour detention and parent contacted
  • Third unexcused absence: student is removed from the program

Students enrolled in 8th hour will stay in the program until their grade improves to a passing status, and they get exit signatures from the teacher of the class they were failing, administration, and their counselor. We need your support to ensure that the students take advantage of the special help. Ultimately, your child will need to do the work required to achieve a passing grade. Simply attending does not guarantee a passing grade.

This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to get their credits so they graduate on time. Freshman year is critical to their overall high school success, and this is one way that we can make sure that our kids get the assistance they need.

Thank you for your continued support. If you have any questions, you may call one of us or the principal, Susan Maland.

Sincerely,
