General Testing Information

Most colleges and Universities will accept either American College Test (ACT) or Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT I) Scores for college entrance. Some colleges (example: UCLA) require the SAT II (Subject Tests) as well as the SAT I and ACT scores. Students should consult college catalogs carefully for specific test requirements.

ACT (American College Test), an achievement test, is accepted for student admission by all Arizona universities and colleges and by many out-of-state institutions. A student profile and interest inventory section is included in the application. Online registration is available as well as application by mail you can pick up in the counselor’s office. It is a 3-hour exam, which consists of a battery of four tests: English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science Reasoning. The ACT is scored on a range from 9 (minimum) to 36 (maximum).

SAT I • Scholastic Aptitude Test • The SAT I test is a test of general intellectual ability, not an achievement test. Its purpose is to assess your future learning potential on the basis of how you have developed intellectually to this point. The SAT I, an aptitude test, is accepted for student admission by all Arizona universities and colleges and is required by many out-of-state institutions. Online registration is available. Recent changes to the SAT I added longer reading passages, the use of calculators, and, in one mathematics section, the requirement to solve problems without the benefit of multiple choice answers. It is a 3-hour aptitude exam which consists of sections which alternate from verbal to math. The SAT I is scored on a range of 400 (minimum to 1600 (maximum).

PSAT
is a practice exam that can be taken by Juniors and Sophomores to get ready for the SAT. National Merit Scholarships base some of their scholarships on PSAT scores as an incentive to have students take it.

ASSET
is used by the Maricopa Community Colleges as a placement test. There are three 25 minute placement tests used to identify your skill levels in English language usage, reading, and mathematics. A calculator is NOT allowed to be used. ASSET scores are used by you and your college advisor to decide which courses to take. Please go to site to practice for the ASSET test since you only have two chances to take the test.

Stanford 10 - Freshmen are required by law to take this state-mandated achievement test. Since the Stanford 10 is considered important, the results will be placed on the student's permanent academic record.

AIMS (Arizona's Instrument to Measure Standards) - Students must pass AIMS in the areas of reading, writing and mathematics to meet graduation requirements. All students who had not shown proficiency on a test are REQUIRED to attend school on the day of the test. Students who do not pass AIMS math by the end of their sophomore year will be required to enroll in math their junior and/or senior year of high school. Please use the AIMS site for questions and practice information.

PBA (Performance based assessment) - Multiple choice and performance based assessments are administered in all core and some elective classes.

Advanced Placement Exams - These tests give students the opportunity to gain credit or advanced standing at most colleges and Universities. They are given in the AP classes of; government, U.S. History, English, Biology, Calculus, Spanish, Physics and Art. All students enrolled in an AP class are required to take the exam(s) which are given in May.
